WYM launches inaugural JP2 Cup

Read about our inaugural diocesan football tournament, a celebration of community and sporting achievement.

We recently launched our inaugural JP2 Cup football tournament. Eight teams competed, which reflected various parish groups and communities, providing a dynamic cross-section of the diocese.

The energy, both on and off the pitch, was palpable. All players can all hold their heads up high as they played with enthusiasm, passion and comradery, and many continued socialising afterwards with a well-earned pint at the local pub.

We are grateful to his Eminence Cardinal Vincent, who expressed his support and encouragement for the event. Reflecting on the patronage of St John Paul II, Cardinal Vincent explained that “He reminded us that sport, when practised with integrity and joy, becomes a school of virtue and a path to holiness.” The day certainly reflected that, and many participants remarked on the particular hope and encouragement they had received from it.

The tournament was supported by a few priests from the diocese, who either played in teams, or provided companionship and spiritual support between games. These priests created great rapport, connecting with young energetic Catholics. Confessions were available all day, and numerous participants gladly made use of this opportunity.

The Holy Spirit was at work. Many friendships and connections were made, and the players are now eager to win the Cup next year!
